Sonia's was a brief but joy-filled life. She came into our family's life shortly before her mom died. She entered our family's hearts after one of her first siblings prematurely overdosed on some of mom's cancer meds as this first white German Shepherd pup was simply being a normal mischievious pup. Sonia was a white German shepherd who became the soul mate and comforter for her dad, Billy Petrey. Sonia was nearly 2 years old when she had to put to sleep. At first, her symptoms mimicked the usual hereditary hip displasia many German Shepherds end up enduring but soon it took on a neurological spin which ended up quickly robbing her of her zest for living. She stopped eating even her most favorite snacks which her big bubby, Joshua, loved sharing with her. So rather than prolong her suffering, Billy was left with little to no alternative. Sonia had been the last gift my sister, Rhonda, gave to him --- the spring before her very own death August 5, 2007. It's been a bit over one year and now Billy has been left trying to grapple with 2 great losses in his life all the while trying to care for 8 children as a single parent. This has nearly torn his sanity from him. My heart is greatly saddened for him. Dogs have a personality that helps shape and bring life into a home. He hasn't just lost a dog, he's lost a friend, an alternative family member and that's what has been almost unbearable to him. Christmas two years straight has been empty and difficult for him. May God help him get through yet another holiday season with the Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy that turn the gears of this advent season.
